One of the 7 wonders of the world is in our own backyard. The Grand Canyon! Both Ben and I went when we were kids but could we really appreciate the millions of years it took to create this view? It really was something you just stared at in aw for a long time.
We have been staying in a little town about an hour south of the GC called Williams AZ. It’s right along route 66 so there are a bunch of stores and old-time-y gas stations. Fun to walk around the shops and look at souvenirs.
One thing about living in an RV, you don’t have room for much. So we admire whats on the shelf but don’t ever buy. We only collect patches for everywhere we have gone. I think I will make a quilt out of my patches some day.
Hiking at the Grand Canyon
Our play day to the grand canyon started fairly early as we wanted to get there before it was too hot. The weather is between 55-85 degrees so the earlier we can hike around the better. There were beautiful blue skies and a slight breeze. Not sure how we got so lucky but we did!
We make our way to Mather point where we just sat and stared for a while. It almost felt like a picture.
Yes, Ben has a think about doing handstands everywhere we go. It’s fun except when you are feet from the edge of death! In this picture it looks worse than it really is. There was about 10 feet and some rocks a few feet down but still, I only let him do it once.
The visitor center had a super cool video projected on a round globe hovering in the center of the room. I took a video because I thought my dad would love it. It explained how these canyons came about. Crazy how old the earth is and what it looks like under your feet.
Afterward Mather point, we hiked east along the rim trail and actually ran into some Elk just hanging out on the trail. They didn’t move so we just calmly walked past. After hiking east, we decided to take the shuttle as far west as we could go along the Grand Canyon and made our way to Hermits rest where we got some soda. Sometimes you just need a coke in the middle of a hot day.
I really enjoy doing these things with Ben. Our traveling styles are very aligned. For example, we were both open to hiking part of Bright Angel, but at the end of the day, it’s the same view so we decided to do other things.
Being in Williams AZ is fun but not two weeks fun. It might be because we are spoiled with so much going on but we decided to head out a few days early. But not before we could head back up to the Grand Canyon AGAIN for a sunset.
We went up on Saturday night and tired to find a good place to watch the sun go down. It was still breath taking views and some amazing colors.
Definitely something everyone needs to see in their lifetime. Just wow…
Next stop, Las Vegas Baby!
